The Cover Girls released their fourth hit single, "Inside Outside" from their successful debut album "Show Me". The song was another smash for them, Peaking at number #12 on the Hot Dance Club Play, #21 on Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Singles Sales, and #55 on Billboard's Hot 100. The record was released in 1988 on Fever Records.

One of my favorite groups of all time returned with their fourth straight hit, "Tears May Fall." This is arguably TKA's best song, and my favorite of theirs. It brings me back to my Junior High School days, and all the crazy house parties my parents used have in the 80's. They would blast the salsa music in the living room, while I would blast this record in my bedroom. "Tears May Fall" shot all the way up to #10 on Billboards Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Singles Sales, #6 on the Hot Dance Club Play, and even cracking the R&B/Hip Hop charts at #63 in 1988. It was produced by Andy "Panda" Tripoli, and the amazing Latin Rascals. The song was featured on their classic Freestyle album Scars Of Love. Released in 1987 on Tommy Boy Records.

PICKIN' UP THE PIECES-BRENDA K. STARR

Born to a Puerto Rican mother and an Israeli father in New York City, Brenda Kaplan first started her career with this record right here. After auditioning and recording a track called "Vicious Beat" for the movie Beat Street (where she also appears), Brenda was offered a recording contract with Mirage Records.

Her first single "Picking Up The Pieces" was a huge hit for Brenda peaking at #9 on Billboards Maxi-Singles Sales Chart, and on the Hot Dance Club Play Charts. The song also cracked the R&B/Hip Hop Billboard Charts at #83. Her debut album "I Want You" soon followed, but no other single in there matched the intensity of this song. This record is still one of my favorite's in my collection. Produced by the legend Arthur Baker in 1985 on Mirage. Check out the Dub and the old school cow bell's. Hot!

This is Sal Medina's, Luis Salgado, and Raymon Zavaleta's first official Chicago Freestyle song, around the same time LAW introduced "One More Chance For Love", and Legacy "Girls Do It For Fun" in 1992.

Raymon Z created quite a buzz on Harv Roman'sWCYC 90.5 FM "Freestyle Sundays Show, located in a Chicago neighborhood called "Little Village". Ironically Luis and Raymon were from "Little Village" so the fan base was huge with a local new Freestyle singer.

Unfortunately, this was Raymon's first and last live performance. Raymon Z the Freestyle artist became AKA "Shorty Mex" rapper on the same stage. The song was never pressed or released. Harv Roman awarded Raymon Z right after the concert performance that included a performance by Freestyle legend Judy Torres, with an honorary plaque to honor an achievement for a local kid from the same neighborhood where WCYC 90.5 FM Harv Roman's Freestyle Sunday show was broadcast. www.myspace.com/harvroman

This was D'Zyre's second and last single they ever released. Although not highly as popular as their first hit "Forever Amor," it still proved to be a banger! I actually like this song better than "Forever Amor," and feel as it should've also been a Billboard hit.

D' Zyre was supposed to released an album soon after but unfortunately it never got to see the light of day. "Games Of Love" was written, produced, and sung by Troy Guy, featuring the female vocals of Andrea Salazar. released on DJ International Records at the end of 1991.

L.A.W. (Love & Wisdom) returned one last time with the amazing third single, "Missing Your Love." These guy's were one of the best new school acts around and one of my favorites, don't know why they didn't continue recording great songs. Lead singer Julio Rodriguez later went solo and recorded the unreleased single called "Angelina." The song was supposed to be released on Throb Records with DJ Tim Spinnin' Schommer and J.J. Flores as producers but for some reason it never did. It did play locally on Chicago radio, and was featured only on a Freestyle mix CD compilation.

During the end of 1994 Legacy released what would be their last single. "The Time Is Right" was another great track by the boys. They also had a music video which never had it's chance to air. It also included a cameo by Baseball legend Chicago cub's Sammy Sosa. Juanie Rodriguez left the group was replaced by Erick Perez, but Juanie eventually came back to join Legacy once more.

East Chicago's Joel was one of the original members of the group Legacy. Members Jessie and Joel recorded the original version of "Girls Just Do It For Fun" on a label the boy's created called International Latin House Records. Joel eventually parted way's with Jessie and went on to pursue a solo career under Chicago's DJ International Records. This was his first single which was a big hit on Chicago radio. "Prisoner Of Love" was released in 1992, featuring the vocals of D' Zyre's Andrea Salazar.

By request, here's the slammin' second single from Chicago's Rochelle. The emotional "Holding On To Love" track was produced again by the 20 Fingers crew of J.J. Flores and Charlie Babie. Rochelle released one last single the following year, the latin flavored dance hit "Nene" which recieved lot's of airplay, including in Miami where it was a huge hit. As an added bonus I included "Nene" below. "Holding On To Love" was released on S.OS. Records in 1995.Enjoy!

I love this song. This group's original members were Erik G, Troy guy & Cruzita who recorded the original version of "Forever Amo'r"(Posted below). Erik G re-created the group after Troy left, and released two banging Freestyle jams (Check older post for "Baby you are the one"), this time featuring the vocals of Armante. "Here I go again" was produced by J.J. Flores and DJ Tim Spinnin' Schommer on Rio Records in 1993.

D'Zye's "Forever amor" was probably Chicago's biggest Freestyle record. Originally released on DJ International Records and then picked up on Atlantic Records, "Forever amo'r" wound up cracking the Billboard Hot 100 at #36 in 1992, a strong achievement for a Freestyle record. Written, composed, produced and sung by Troy Guy with females vocals by Andrea Salazar. The song was originally recorded by Troy's old group Innefect until he parted ways, and re-recorded the track with a new female vocalist.

"Forever Amo'r" was also Produced by the great J.J. Flores . D'Zyre released another hot single before calling it quits. Troy Guy produced many great artist since then, and is also featured in the Dino Latino "Forever Amor" reggaeton flavored remake of "Forever amor" that was released a few years back.

The rare and controversial "Forever Amour" record which was originally released by the Chicago group Innefect. Troy Guy, Eric G & Cruzita were all members of this group until Eric and Troy had a fall out. Troy eventually left and started D'Zyre and re-released "Forever Amor" to much greater success. Don't really know the real story behind this, but I know there was a lot of drama, and some people got sued. Anyone out there wants to touch on this? drop me an e-mail or comment. Check out this hot song, produced by yet again Charlie Babie, who was originally part of the New York group Babie & Keyes. They released two classic Freestyle singles during their time together on Criminal Records titled "Playgirl" and "Secrets of love." Charlie later went solo and signed to Mic Mac Records where he released his classic, and favorite of mine, "In the name of love." He later moved to Chicago in the mid 90's to work on some projects and eventually wound up staying there and becoming part of the 20 Fingers crew. This was on of his records. "Your love is on the run" was released on the famous DJ International Records label back in 1994.

Here's one of the greatest new school Freestyle records ever, straight from the windy city of Chicago. This slammin' song blew me away when I first heard it play on Miami's Power 96. With it's hard hitting beat's and powerful vocals, "In My heart" was One of the few Chicago records to crossover to the Miami market. DJ Laz would always bang this record out on his Freestyle mix show where it attained cult status amongst Freestyle heads.

Written and produced by the 20 fingers crew of J.J. Flores & Charlie Babie (Babie & Keyes). These guys always came out with good quality Freestyle tracks that stood out in the Genre. Now a rare hard- to-find record (I paid $100 for mine on Ebay years ago), this song would've been huge if released during Freestyle's hey-day. Released in 1996 on Za-Za Records. Enjoy guys.

"Praying For An Angel" by Rochelle was a big hit for her when she was really young. This Chicago Freestyle classic shot straight to the top of the charts, including Peaking at number #32 on Billboards Dance/Singles Sales. The song was produced by J.J. Flores & Charlie Babie of the 20 Fingers team who went on to produce dance classics like Gillette's "Short dick man," "Lick it" by Roula and others. Rochelle would go on to release a few more dance hits, including my favorite of hers, "Holding on to love" (will post soon). Twin sisters, Josie and Elsie were known as Exotic Love back in the day. They first got their start in the music industry by entering a contest to compete for recording studio time. Their first release, "Boy you're mine" was a big hit with Freestyle lovers, and also a number one hit on Chicago stations like WCYC & WCRX, plus Spun on B-96 mix shows by DJ Tim Spinnin' Schommer. The girls ended up opening up for Freestyle legends like Judy Torres, George Lamond, Lil' Suzy, and others. They would also released another single titled "Tell me why" (I'll post later), and are now in the process of returning with some new material. Stay tuned!

Jessie, Javier and Juanie of Legacy returned in 1993 with their biggest single "Stay with me tonight". This Chicago Freestyle classic was a big hit for the guys and established them as local stars, with the help of B-96's DJ extraordinaire Tim Spinnin' Schommer, and also JJ Flores who produced the song. This Chicago favorite came along with chants, Harmonies and rap as well, making it a stand out song in the scene. This gave Legacy their second top ten hit and another great Billboard review. They also had a cool video for "Stay with me" which was featured on "The Box", as well as "Street Mix show" channel 26 in Chicago. The boy's built a following and began touring the states making fans all over the country, but then an unfortunate incident happend.... Classic Chicago Freestyle by Felix Miranda featuring the vocals of Jane Katherine. This song was produced by Mickey Oliver, with some Timbales action by the legendary Ralphi Rosario. Ralphi went on to produce many house classics and remixes, including his best work, hands down the classic, "You used to hold me" featuring Xavier Gold. These days Ralphi is still giving us bangin' house remixes from the likes of Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Pussycat Dolls just to name a few. You can catch Ralphi spinnin' at circuit parties alongside DJ Abel under Rosabel. Check them out along with DJ Tony Moran at my favorite New York City party Alegria, held every holiday at Webster Hall. "Take my Love" was released in 1988 on Mixin Music Records.

Here's a cute little track by Latin Soul which I used to hear in mix shows when I was young but didn't know who sang it until years later. Latin Soul's lead singer Sandi Castillo released "Promise Me" when she was just 18 years old. The song was released in 1990, and was huge on Chicago stations like WCYC with Harv Roman, and also B96 with DJ's like Tim Spinnin' Schoomer. Sandi later teamed up with the Force in 1992 and re-released "The Promise" with new remixes on DJ International Records. The last few years we've seen Sandi doing Rock music with her cover band, but more recently she's been back on that stage performing her dance classic. I'm back. I can't believe it's finally 2009. What a wild & crazy New Years I had! I had sooo much fun partying with some my friends till 12pm the next day. We hit a bunch of house parties, about 5 or 6 clubs and bars, and I ended that morning in a 3-way makeout session (under the influence of a few drinks of course) Woooah. Good times!

Continuing with the Chicago series, I bring you another slammin' track I love. "Baby you are the one" by In-Effect is a favorite to many Freestyle heads who love that Chicago sound. The groups original lineup consisted of Troy guy, Erick G, and Cruzita. After Troy and Erick had a falling out, Troy went on to form D'zyre, and released the now classic "Forever Amour" on DJ International Records. Erick recreated In-Effect with another Female artist named Armante and released this banger, "Baby you are the one" on Rio Records. The track has became another rare hard-to-find 12'inch. It was recently seen on Ebay going for $140.00. The song was produced by the amazing legendary Chicago DJ Tim Spinnin' Schoomer and released in 1990. *Another big shout to Seth Politano for sending me this gem*

Here's a great Chicago Freestyle classic which is a now a rare hard to find record. The song was written and sung by vocalist Dino Cardone. I heard Dino wrote this track for his then girlfriend Rose after she left him. When "My Sweet Rose" became a hit, Rose ended up getting back together with Dino....funny thing is that Dino broke up with her right after. The track was produced by Onofrio Lollino on Groove Kontrol Records and released in 1991. A BIG THANK YOU to Seth Politano who's helped me find the rare classics for this Chicago series.

L.A.W. consisted of two guys from Chicago named Julio Rodriguez & Geraldo Echevarria. These guys only released a few singles during their short time together in the 90's, but I still consider their tracks some of the most emotional and beautiful Freestyle songs ever released. All their songs were always so powerful and deep, especially with their amazing vocals and those hard hitting Chicago beats that served as background. "Remember the times" was their second release and a huge hit all over Chicago. It was released on Strictly Hype Records in 1995 and produced by one of the members Julio and DJ Trajic. Wish these boys would get back together and release some more quality Freestyle like this.

GIRLS DO IT JUST FOR FUN (1989 VERSION ABOVE)

Here is some slammin' classic Chicago Freestyle for your ass! Legacy originally consisted of two guys named Jessie Settle and Joel. Jessie started his career as a local DJ, spinning all through the South East side of Chicago. Through his experience as a DJ, Jessie fell in love with Freestyle music. In 1989 he decided to retire from the DJ-world and pursue a singing career in the music industry. Soon after he met up and coming Freestyle singer Joel and the singing dou was born. The name originated as "Latin Lagacy" but the "Latin" was removed and it remained as Legacy. In 1989 they recorded their first demo called "Girls do it just for fun" and released it on their label Latin House Records. Only 500 copies of that original Latin House label were pressed and released. It has since become a collectors item with Freestyle vinyl freaks like myself. Despits the fact that limited copie were pressed, Jesie and Joel toured the city creating a huge buzz and following for Legacy. In 1991 the boys decided to part ways. Joel went on and pursued a solo artist career under Chicao's DJ International Records. He released his first single, the now classic Chicago Freestyle jam "Prisoner of Love".

Jessie decided to continue with Legacy and made the group into a three man show. He went to search for 2 more members and decided to bring in one of his good friends named Javier Romero, who was also a DJ. They also added dancer Juanie Rodriguez to the mix, who was spectacular on the dance floor and had talent to be a rap star. Thus the new and improved Legacy was born. They signed with DJ International Records and released the remix version of "Girls do it just for fun" which was produced by the legendary J.J. Flores. The song became a smash hit all over Chicago, getting spins on stations like WCYC 90.5 by another legend Harv Roman, B-96, and WCRX 88.1 FM. Legacy had put Freestyle back in the map in Chicago, it was a proud moment for the boys. They would release a few more hit singles (which I will post a little later) but their dreams were stopped short due to some unfortunate circumstances that were beyond their control. The boys Jessie and Javier were both placed in the Department of Corrections for a crime they say they did not do. It's been 14 years since the boys have been incarcerated and they're still fighting for their freedom.

The Legacy boys are calling on all the Freestyle fans across the U.S. to come together and help them come home. They look forward to recieving letters from their fans and promise to write them all back. What a crazy & sad week it's been. I ended a year long releationship with someone, got really sick all week from food poisoning (Just got back from the hospital), my computer crashed (Finally got it reformat at Apple) and to top it off we lost the beautiful Freestyle diva Sandee just a few days ago(Posted below). Hopefully things will start to look up this week. Here is a special treat that was sent to me by my friend Ivan Diller. I never heard of this song before Ivan sent it, but I'm loving it. Girls in Control were four girls from the Bronx named Denise, Diane, Frances, and Mona. I believe this was the only release the girls had. They performed at several clubs around Manhattan during Freestyle's heyday, including Roseland and also various clubs in California where they were quite popular. The track was written and produced by Michael Garvin and released on Marlo Records in 1989. Thanks Ivan!

SANDEE R.I.P.

Earlier this evening I recieved some sad news regarding Freestyle/Dance diva Sandee. I'm sad to inform the ones that don't know yet, Sandee has passed away. She was found dead in her Hollywood, Florida apartment today at 4pm. No details have yet surfaced, but I'm still in shocked. This is a great loss for the Freestyle & Dance community. My deepest sympathy goes out her family.

Growing up in Miami, Sandee was one of the few artist to blow up big and sign to a major label, making us all proud. Born in the lower east side of New York City, then raised in sunny South Florida, She first started her career as one of the original members of Expose recording such classics as "Point of no return" and "Exposed to Love". After she went solo she signed to East West Records and then Atlantic Records and released her first single, the now classic "You're the one". The record was a big success, it went and topped Billboards Dance Charts for weeks. In 1989 she released the smash hit "Notice me" on Fever Records. Produced and written by C&C's Robert Clivilles and the late David Cole, the song was a top 10 hit on Billboard. The remix version was also huge, and had a life of it's own. It was a favorite in the House clubs of New York, and to this day it's regarded as one of House Music's best classics. After "Notice Me" was released, the Puerto Rican diva signed a record deal with Columbia Records, recorded her debut album "Only time will tell", and released her third single, "Love Desire" which was her biggest single to date. The song reached the top 5 on Billboards Dance Charts, and also peaked on Billboards top 100, including the R&B/Hip Hop Charts.

One of my favorite memories of Sandee was the first time I saw her perform. I was 13 years old and it was at the Six Flags Atlantis Waterpark at the height of her career. she was doing "You're the one", and I'll never forget how great she was, so full of energy & fire. Right in the middle of the song she screams out "Que Viva La Musica Latina!!!", and The crowd went nuts. At that very moment I felt so proud to be a latino and to have one of our own representin' this music. Another memory was The very last time I saw her perform at the Copa for one of Sal Abbatiello's Freestyle Fever parties. She took a moment in between songs and spoke about her and her family's struggles in the past with drugs and alcholol. Man She touched me so deep that night That she had me in tears. I releated to well to her. I loved her so much for being real. Sandee you will be greatly missed by all, Your memory will live on forever through your fans who will continue to blast your music for years, never forgetting the amazing memories it has given us. The Music Industry has truly lost one of the best. You are now with the angels baby girl!

As I close this volume of the Miami series, I wanted to give a big THANK YOU to everyone, including some of the artist who helped me out by sending me songs, pictures, and updated information on some of these act's that ruled the South Florida airwaves and clubs during the 80's and early 90's. we'll do it again sometime next year.

Here's a record that was one of the last Freestyle songs to come out of South Florida in the early 90's. Another big hit on power 96. It was during this time that I was growing tired of the freestyle sound, and getting more into the new underground Rave scene that was happening in Miami. It was all about Techno,Trance & House music for me after that. Music was changing and Radio and club's started playing more House tracks (Notice the House influence on this record). I used to run and DJ this hot lil' night called Sanctuary in South Beach and we played everything from Industral, Goth to Rave. To the kids freestyle wasn't the cool thing anymore. My passion for it obviously didn't die but just took a little break. It wasn't until a few years later when Joey Gardner released his Freestyle Greatest Beats compilations that I fell back in love with my music roots. I almost forgot about this track right here, but thanks to Rigo at 305 Disco for helping me refresh my memory.

After scoring a big hit with their debut single, "Is it me the one", the girls of 4-REAL returned with this local track which topped the charts in Miami for weeks. These girls were fire, performing all over South Florida to thousands of fans. I must admit I almost became a member of their fan club (which never came to be). They later released one last single, but it didn't fare as well as their first two releases. One of the members (think her name was carol ann) was sister to Jill of "Match made up in heaven", the other member named Gina Lamarca became an actress in movie's like Wild Things with Kevin Bacon, and also became Penthouse pet of the month in May 1993, and later Penthouse Pet of the year of the year 1995. She was known for her vivacious style as well as for the shape of her pubic hair which was shaped in a distinctive flying "V" configuaration....HOT! . 4-real's "What comes around goes around" was produced by Tommy Costa & Erick Foster White, with edits by the legendary Whiz Kids out of Miami. It was released on Prestige Records in 1988.

After having a big hit with their 1988 Miami classic "I want U," the original girls of Teaz-2-Pleaz returned with this second single in 1989. Althought it wasn't the smash hit their prior single was, the song proved to be one of their best. Jasmin & Monique (real names: Betty & Nora) were the same twins who recorded under the group name Precious (posted below). In 1991 they were replaced by three entirely different girls, and my love for Teaz-2-Pleaz then soon ended....I guess It was a common thing in Miami to replace Freestyle artist. It used to always piss me off. Below is the original group picture sent to me by my friend Jennifer Belgard. I don't know what happend to mine, but This is from the BPM records in-store autograph party the group did. "That's what I like" was produced by Tom Weisser, and released on Ten-Lion Records.

Miami's Precious were two cute cuban twins named Betty and Nora Fabricio. They released their first single in 1987 titled "you and me baby." they returned the following year with this second single, "Let me know." Both tracks were underground hits in South Florida. Right after that second record they added a third girl to the group named Mara Pacheco, and the group name was changed to Teaz 2 Pleaz. Their names were also changed to stage nicknames like Bambi, Jasmin and Monique. They released their smash hit, "I want U" that same year(Check older post). Below is the Precious single, "Let me know" which was produced by Mikey C, and Michael S, with edits by Power 96 DJ Eddy Mix. Released on HHH Records in 1988.

Pretty Pretty was two hot Cuban chicks from Miami named Lorraine & Roxi. One was a hairdresser and the other was...well a singer? They released this bass inspired song (Think L'trimm) "Nasty Habits" in the fall of 1988 on Bush Baby Records. The song was a hit on Power 96. (I think that was probably the only station that played them). They also released a second single, "Wait a minute" which had more of a Freestyle sound than this. The last time I saw this act perform was at Hot Wheels, but by then they had replaced these two hotties with three not-so-good looking females. That would be the last time I would hear of this group....You have to appreciate the cheeze factor in this song though, it's one of the reasons why I love it so much.

This track is dedicated to my childhood friend named Jennifer Belgard, who recently found me on Facebook after so many years. My Memories of Jennifer go back to the late 80's and early 90's. She and her family lived on a big boat in the backyard of my home (we have the Miami river running through the back). She was really young, but I used to drag her out with my cousin Marely to a lot of these freestyle events, like Hot Wheels Skating Center to catch Latin Rascals, Secret Society & Erotic Exotic perform. We would always stay past her curfew, then bring her home at 3am to have her dad yell and punish her. Haha, Good times! Also at BPM Records where we stood in line to meet acts like Teaz 2 Pleaz, and these girls right here Pretty Pretty. Thanks Jenny for digging out this picture. Mine was burned along with some of my records by a crazy Ex. Ouch! Jennifer now owns her own shop called Libertine in Atlanta, Georgia, and hangs with cool transvestite rockers like Jayne County. UPDATE: Pretty Pretty member Roxi would later join the Merenbooty girls in the late 90's and score a #1 hit with the dance remake of "Ring my Bell". Thanks Rigo!

NASTY HABITS (POWER BOOM MIX)

The king of the Miami Freestyle sound returned with his second hit single "Dreamin' of Love" in 1988. Like Will to power's "Dreamin'" (below), this one also had another memorable keyboard intro that made you go wild and scream out "OHhhhh" everytime you heard that first key hit. Born in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Stevie B combined the both sounds of the Miami and New York Freestyle to his music, always leading to successful results. This single which was a huge hit when I was still in Junior high (Where's my Citrus Grove people at?) reached #8 on Billboards Dance music/Maxi-Singles Sales chart, But only #80 on Billboards Hot 100. With hit after hit, Stevie B became one of the most recognized and sought after performers in the Freestyle scene. You can still catch Stevie performing all his old school jams, including some new ones from his recent albums.

This is one of the greatest Miami Freestyle records ever released. Who can forget that memorable synth at the beginning of this song. reminds me of a time when my life had no worries. Will to Powers history goes a little something like this: in 1985 Bob Rosenberg used to DJ at Miami's Hot 105, when they played all dance music (this was before they became all R&B, and before Power 96 came and took over). He was the first on-air mixing DJ in South Florida, Producing remixes and medleys of different hits which became popular at the station. He was hired by groups like 2 Live Crew to provide bass cuts for their albums.

In 1987, Rosenberg along with Dr. J, and then girlfriend Suzi Carr, would form Will to Power. Maria Mendez, (sister of Lazaro "DJ Laz" Mendez ) who would later record the freestyle song "Out of Control" under the name Falcon, was also a member of Will to Power for a brief moment. Their first single "Dreaming" became the dance song of the summer. It was originally released on Thrust Records, but after the song made a lot of club noise, Epic records quickly signed it and released it with new remixes. It quickly climbed the charts on radio stations like New York's Hot 103, and Miami's Power 96 (where it became the #1 song of the year, staying in the top five for over thirty weeks). At the time, Power 96's program director Bill Tanner (Tanner in the morning), stated that "Dreaming" was the biggest pop song in South Florida history....Their first performance was at the old Club 1235/Decos spot in South Beach. Although many big time acts performed there, Will to power held the record for the most in attendance with 5200 people that saturday night of their first show.

Will to Power would go on to have a few more #1 dance hits on the charts, including their ballad, "Baby I love your way/Freebird" which became their most successful single to date. They released two popular albums under Epic Records, But after having some artistic differences, Bob Rosenberg walked away from Epic records and the Music industry for years. He went back into the studio in 2004 and released the Spirit Warrior 2005 album which featured songs with artist like DJ Laz, Oba Frank Lords from Secret Society, and Expose's Gioia on "Dreaming (again)." In March 2006, remixer/producer Giuseppe D. provided remixes for Will to Power's Spirit Warrior remixed EP. The Original vocalist Suzi Carr is still touring and doing big Freestyle events, performing all her Will to Power classics.

The current incarnation of Will to Power features Rosenberg along with two female vocalist. In 2009 the group is set to release a new CD, which is headed into the Electro Bass direction. Scratch D from Dynamix II and DJ Minus B were assisting Bob Rosenberg in all phases of production as well as mixing. Their last single, "Still fading away" (yet another remake) was actually pretty hot. Below is the classic "Dreaming," which also features background vocals from Ale and Laurie Miller (formely of the original Expose) and was mixed by Derrick Rahming of Afro-Rican, the group known for the Miami bass classic, "give it all you got" & "All of Puerto Rico". Another Miami classic produced by "Pretty" Tony Butler. Every record he released back then was an absolute banger. Although not the original Debbie Deb on vocals, the song was still a big hit. This was one of the Debbie Deb "imposters" who took over the mic, after the original was dropped for being overweight. I think this one's real name was Anne Williams. She would later recorded the freestyle song "Cries in the dark" under her own name. "I'm searching" hit the Billboard Dance Sales charts at #8, and it also manage to crack the the Hip Hop/R&B charts at #72. Lookout for the real Debbie Deb who's still out there performing her classic hits.

Secret Society was one of Miami's most popular live bands. They had a string of local radio hits in South Florida. this one shot straight up to the #1 spot on Power 96. One of the highlights of watching this group perform was seeing group member Frank Lords go crazy on the percussions. Frank later went on form LatinXpress, and had chart success with the song "Discarga".His biggest hit would be in the form of the Darkbeat project he did with Oscar G and Ralph Falcon of Murk. They had a #1 hit with the House Dance classic, "Darkbeat" in 2002. Below is his classic Miami Freestyle track, "We belong together" which was released back in the day in 1988.

My favorite part of this record is the intro on the radio version, with the pretty synths and her angelic vocals singing "La, La....La, La Laaaaaaa......Ahhhhh," or better yet, the Bass break in the club version where she starts Moaning, and having an orgasam. Miami's Rare Design were two cute girls whose names were Maggie Fernandez & Karen Washington. Their first single "Too late for love" on City Heat Productions was a big hit for them in the fall of 1988. They later signed to Wise Guy Records and released two more singles which I love. "Too late for love" was written, arranged, composed & produced by Omar Vasquez, with edits by Power 96 DJ Eddy Mix.

I believe I met Rare Design at BPM Records in Miami, any heads remember that local DJ spot? It was a 12-inch vinyl store only, and They had tons of local acts there on the weekends signing autographs. The store used to be located in the parking lot of Miami's International Mall. I met so many of these singers at this legendary place while my mom and her friend waited outside in her car (Hey I was only 12). Damn looking back I must looked like a little "Freestyle groupie" LOL. Funny to think, but these singers, popular or underground, were sort of like role models to me....Those were the days though man, how I miss them.

Here is another Tolga Katas production I love. The Miami born Cubano, Ray Guell made his debut with this song in 1989. His second single, "You took my heart" was supposed to be his first release, but when Ray & Tolga got together to lay down the background vocals, Ray thought of an idea for another song. the guys started messing around the studio with it, and the song turned out to be "Just another lover."

The song was a smash hit down in Miami, taking Ray to the top of the charts. In Brazil where Freestyle music was referred to as "Funky Melody", the track hit the top 10 establishing Ray as a major dance artist through out Brazil, especially in Rio Janeiro, Brasilia and Sao Paolo. Ray Guell became one of Brazil's most recognized "Funky Melody" artist.

Ray recalls the first time he heard his song play on Miami's Power 96. "It was very surreal. I was alone in my car and I remember I started to cry like a baby. That particular experience I only shared with God." Ray is still touring and making new music, his recent release "In your eyes," with hot electro remixes by Jorge Ojeda is available now on www.beatport.com. Check it out!

As I continue with the Miami series, I bring you to a popular South Florida trio which had 9 different girls throughout the years. The ones I remember were the original Cuban girls who went by their stage name of bambi, Yasmin & Monique. Their real names were actually Mary, Betty & Nora, and they released this Ten-Lion Records classic jam in 1988, which was huge hit in Miami. Betty & Nora were actually twin sisters who had a prior underground Freestyle record titled "let me know" under the group name Precious.

Teaz-2-Pleaz went on to release many singles through the years, and a greatest hits compilation. "I Want U" was their biggest hit which peaked at #50 on Billboards Hot Dance Club Play in early 1989. The original Teaz-2 Pleaz was another act I saw perform at Hot Wheels (How many Hot Wheels heads are out there?). The track was produced by Power 96's DJ "Jammin" Johnny Caride & Vic Ten.

Mercy-Merci was a hot little group out of Miami who had a few local hits. The group consisted of lead singer Marilyn "Mimi" Diaz, who also used to be part of the group Bi-Chance, the lovely Patricia mario, and Dawn Rix, plus Roly Garcia. This group always put on a great show. They would first come out on stage wearing these black spooky hooded capes for the shows intro, then take them off to reveal their sexy outfits with these tiny mini skirts and bustiers.

This song reminds me so much of this little stalker I had in Junior High who would call my house at all hours of the night. She would leave me these crazy "I love U" messages on my voicemail, and would follow me everywhere I hung out. Yamile this song is dedicated to you, wherever you are.

"If I had a chance" was Mercy-Merci's first hit. it ended up snatching the top spot on Power 96 in 1989. The record was produced by Avy Gonzalez, with edits by the Whiz Kids and released on Runaway Records. The group would go on to release two more singles before splitting up. Some of the guys from Mercy-Merci would later form the group About Face, and would release their 1991 Power hit "I don't wanna sleep alone tonight".

Electro bass label Debonaire Records which was responsible for some of Florida's classic Miami Bass records from Dynamix II to Breezy Beat M.C., released this banger in 1990 with a very similiar sound to that of The Beat Club's "Security"(posted below). The record samples two of Dynamix II classic beats from "Bass Generator," and "Just Give The DJ a Break." The song "Love & Lust" rose to the top of the charts on power 96 when released in 1990. I must have seen these guy's perform at every teen club down in Miami. first got to see Love & Lust at the Hialeah Spring Festival show (Anyone remember those events?). The group came out wearing some crazy egyptian outfits with gold chains and put on a hot show. Check out their picture below which I Found on some site. The song was written, arranged, mixed, and produced by Claudio Barella, with co-production from Jimmy Star.

The Beat Club started off in Miami as a studio project for producer Ony Rodriguez, with his girlfriend and future wife Mireya Valls. Ony had began his career as guitarist and producer for his Group The Voice in Fashion, who had the freestyle hits, "Only in the night", and "Give me your love". He soon decided to pursue his style music more and started The Beat Club. Their track "Security" was produced by Ony and another Miami legend Avy Gonzalez (Genuine parts,Merci-Mercy) and originally released on his Pizazz Record label in 1988. The track drew influences from the Miami Bass & Freestyle sound that was happening in Florida and was successful enough to gain them a major label deal with Atlantic Records.

After their run with Atlantic, The Beat Club was then offered the opportunity to become the first recording act to be signed to New Order manager and Manchester's Factory Record mogul, the late Rob Gretton's own personal label Robsrecord. The group went on to release several recordings in the UK, including the "Security" remix featuring New Order's Bernard Summer on vocals. "Security" was one of the biggest songs at Manchsters legendary club Hacienda.

Back in the states, "Security" was a huge hit all over South Florida. I Remember driving through Coconut Grove in Miami and blasting this track in my friend's lowrider car(then getting fined by the cops for blasting it too loud ). The bass in this track sounded sooo crisp. I also remember catching The Beat Club performing at Hot Wheels Skating Center. Good times....The song peaked at #30 on Billboards Dance Sales Charts, and number #14 on the Hot Dance Club Chart. The Beat Club went on to start Electrobeat Records out of Miami, Fl, and has released quite a few electronic recordings through the years, but has remained a faceless project. "Security" was also recently covered by The Freestylers on their album "Adventures in Freestyle."

I fucken love this record. I saw this girl once at some teen club and man did she tear it up. Don't remember her real name, but I do remember she said she was the sister of Lazaro Mendez from Power 96, also known as the famous DJ Laz. She was so sexy with her white knee high boots, short shorts, and beautiful long hair. The girl had a lot of star quality, plus she also sounded great live.

"Out of control" was one of those songs that should have been a big hit. In my opinion it sounded a little different from the rest of the freestyle that was coming out of Miami during this time. It's such a great song with a lot of energy, and slammin' production. Although It only got a few spins on Power 96, I gave it tons of spins in my bedroom, and even sent Falcon a letter telling her how much I loved her song (I was such a nerd). She sent me back a long letter with an autograhed picture which I can't seem find for this post. Wonder what ever became of her, I don't think she ever released another record. The song was produced by Joe Bersellino and Marc Pomeroy, and mixed by Jimmy Starr. It released in 1989 on Southside Records.

One of my favorite performers had the biggest hit of her career with this song. Miami's queen of Freestyle, Trinere was all over the airwaves in 1986, especially with her smash hit "I'll be all you ever need." This lady was amazing! She would sell out club venues everywhere she performed at in South Florida. Don't understand why no major record Label picked her up, since they signed so many of Miami's local talent.

She followed the success of this song with three more singles from her self-titled full lenth debut album which is regarded as a true freestyle classic with fans. "I'll be all you ever need" was produced by Electro/Miami Bass producer, and then husband "Pretty" Tony Butler. the song reached all the way to #5 on Billboards Hot Dance/Maxi-Singles Sales, and even crossing over to the R&B/Hip Hop songs by peaking at #32. Hope she releases new material soon. I been dying for a new Trinere record for years now!

Back in 1987 major labels were all over Freestyle music. It seemed like any Freestyle record that recieved airplay on Power 96, was picked up by a major label, especially Atlantic Records who gave a lot of these local artist record deals. They were mostly a 12-inch single deal, depending how well the record charted. That was the case with Promise Circle. After scoring a big hit with "Be mine tonight", Miami's own Alina Blanco & Raul Rodriguez returned on Atlantic with their second single titled "Easy to touch". Although not as strong as their debut, it still manage to get some radio play. The song peaked at #24 on Billboards Hot Dance Club Chart, and at #22 on Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Singles Sales in early 1988. The song was produced by Company B's legendary producer ISH.

Alina would eventually go solo and release a single under the artist name of Fontaine. She had some minor club success with her single "Seduced". Promise Circle would go on to release one last single in 1990 called "And the beat goes on" on Pandisc Records before eventually calling it quits.

One of Miami's hottest female groups returned with their biggest hit. the group released their second single "Fascinated" on Summer Records in 1986, and after some success the record was signed to Atlantic Records and became one of the biggest dance songs for the year of 1987 . The lineup consisted of Lori L, Susan Gonzalez and Lori's sister Lezlee Livrano who would replace lead singer Charlotte McKinnon. The group was put together by Cuban-born Miami DJ/Producer ISH Ledesma who fronted 70's group Foxy, and also produced some of the hottest dance tracks in the late 80's .

The girls adorned in white wigs and clad in blue leather became a huge success. they crossed over to the pop charts with "Fascinated." The song reached #1 on Billboards Dance Club Play, and it stayed there for four weeks. Soon after, the single was picked up by top 40 radio, and it charted on Billboards Hot 100 peaking at #21. The song was also #1 on Billboards Dance Music/Maxi-Singles Sales.

"Fascinated" has since been covered by artist like Emjay, and House music diva Suzanne Palmer, featuring hot remixes by DJ Peter Rauhofer and Offer Nissim. Company's B song was also voted #105 on Blender Magazine for "The 500 greatest songs since you were born" in their October 2005 issue. The original two members, Charlotte and Susan recently got back together along with a new member named Rachel, and started performing all over the states. Check their Myspace for dates.

After having two successful singles "It's not to late" & "She don't want you" on Joey Boy Records, Maria & Angie returned with their fourth single "I'm over you" on their new label Capitol Records. The single was another hit for them featuring mixes by DJ "Little" Louie Vega. It also featured special Hot & Power mixes which were designed to play on radio stations that supported Freestyle like Hot 103/Hot 97 in New York, and Power 96 in Miami. Their debut album was soon followed and it featured new Pop, R&B, and of course their Freestyle classics. The song reached #11 on Billboards Dance Club, and #21 on Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Singles Sales. Check out the Dub version intro where you hear Maria calling Angie on the phone and talking about some guy who did Angie wrong. funny stuff lol.

After the girls split, Maria Christensen ended up releasing a few solo albums. She was also the lead singer of the 90's dance trio 3rd Party which had a hit with their single "Can U feel it". She eventually went to write for artist like N-Sync, Celine Dion and Jennifer Lopez ("Waiting for tonight"). The girls recently got back together and are recording new material. They been out touring in support of their new hot freestyle single titled "My love for you" which you can purchase on ITunes. Check it out.

L.O.V.E.-EROTIC EXOTIC

The Miami boy's returned with their second hit single on Joey Boy Records in 1986. "L.O.V.E." was a huge success all over Miami making the group one of the hottest acts to come out of South Florida during the Freestyle era. Atlantic Records took notice and signed the boys. They re-released both of Erotic Exotic's local hits "Take me as I am" & "L.o.v.e." on their label. This single ended up peaking at #48 on Billboards Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Singles Sales in early 1987.

FYI: Before they released their first single, Erotic Exotic used to be the back up band for the original Expose. The guys never released a complete album but you can catch both their greatest hits compilations on Amazon. ....On a sad note, lead singer Eric Tallman passed away in 1994. I'll never forget the last time I saw him. It was at the Flamingo Plaza thrift store in Hialeah, FL. I said hello and spoke to him for a few minutes. It was the last time I would see him before he passed away a few months later. I will always remember Erotic Exotic as the group who really got me into this music back when I was 11 years old. Miami's Genuine Parts came back strong with their second hit single "I Don't Care For You". the original girls Diley & Ivette who recorded "Did It Feel Like Love," also performed this second song in their shows, but they did not get to record it or even return due to some contract dispute. Two new girls were brought in along with a backup band and replaced the original stars.

The song was produced by a Miami legend named Avy Gonzalez who was the DJ at my favorite Miami teen spot Hot Wheels Skating Center. Avy also Co-produced Nancy Martinez "Move Out", and produced The Beat Club's classic hit "Sequirity," along with a few other hits. Genuine Parts would later return with two more singles before calling it quits. Although "I don't care for you" wasn't as big as their debut, it still managed to peaked at #19 on Billboards Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Singles Sales.

UPDATE: Last thing I heard was that Avy was reuniting the original girls, Diley & Ivette for live shows and also to re-record "I don't Care for you". It was supposed to be released with brand new remixes. But after analyzing their lifestyles, they concluded that it would be to demanding to their families and present professional careers. So there you have it, Genuine Parts is officially retired and will not return. But their Miami classics will always live on.

What originally started as a DJ record with samples soon turned into a song for Carlos Berrios. Profile Records asked the producer for the track to include lyrics so he looked around for a singer. A demo version with then girlfriend Nayobe was recorded, but because she was signed to Fever Records she couldn't get a release. Lisette Melendez was then brought in and recorded the verse for just $200.00 and boom, "Make Noise" was born. This would also be the beginning of a working releationship between Carlos and then first time vocalist Lisette. The song was a smash in the NY club scene. It peaked at #41 on Billboards Hot Dance Chart in 1988. Produced, Mixed, and edited by Carlos Berrios and written by Tomax who did "No Regrets".

PKO Records released a few great Freestyle jams during the late 80's. This was one of them by female trio Diva. The girl in the middle of the picture above is named Annette. And before she was in Diva, she was part of the group Amoretto who did the freestyle classic "Clave Rocks". "I wanna break night with you" would be the only release we would hear from Diva. The boys of Trilogy returned after having an underground hit with the Jackie Jack Records single "Red Hot." They were signed soon after to Prism/PKO Records in 1987 and released Their second single "Latin Love." Prism Records was home to several legendary Hip Hop artist such as Biz Markie, Big Daddy Kane, kool G Rap, MC Shan, Master Ace, Kid Kapri, Marly Mal and many more. Trilogy would be the first Freestyle group to be signed to their record label.

"Latin Love" became an instant hit, and made the boys stars in their hometown of New York. It was no.1 on the city's Hot 103 countdown, and in Miami's Power 96 in the early summer of 1988. It has since became a cult classic to all Freestyle fans. The song was written by one of the members of Trilogy CNR, along with assistance from the first Puerto Rican rappers and DJ's O.C. of the Fearless Four and Charlie Chase of the Cold Crush Bros who also produced the track. The Latin Rascals also joined in by hooking up some hot edits for this record.

First and only time I saw Trilogy was at Six Flags Atlantis in Fort Lauderdale, Fl back in the summer of 1988 for I think a Power 96 show. It was at the height of Freestyle's peak and the place was packed with kids waiting to see these boys perform. I still remember the energy of the crowd....And of course the fights LOL. You couldn't have a Freestyle show without a gang fight in those days. The line up was an all star of who's who in Freestyle with acts like Pretty Poison, Trinere, FFWD, Will To Power and these boys right here who tore it up that day. Trilogy later released a few more hit singles, and also had a stint with C & C Music Factory, but this song is one of the records the group is best remembered by. Check it out below.

These girls were the shit! They were one of the biggest groups in the Freestyle genre. Sweet Sensation were a female trio who consisted of original members Betty "Dee" Lebron who was from the Bronx, and sisters Margie and Mari Fernandez from the lower east side in New York City.

The girls met while attending Satellite Academy. They knew Joseph Malloy, better known as Romeo J.D. of the Boogie Boys. He had written a track called "Hooked on you," and thought Betty could sing it. She went into the studio and recorded the song for Next Plateu Records. After the song was recorded the group was put together. "Our name was originally was Sweet Temptation", Betty remembers. "It was printed on the label. And the day before the record was released, we got word from the Temptation management company telling us we couldn't use the name. We were stuck with Sweet Temptation on vinyl and didn't know what to do. We needed something that rhymed with temptation, and Sensation came up.

"Hooked on you" was finally released and became a huge hit in dance markets like NY, Miami and in the West Coast. It reached #64 on Billboards Hot 100. It was an instant favorite with fans, and another all time favorite of mine. Sweet Sensation would go on to have a string of hits, followed by two studio albums and also a remix one. Jose Antonio Baez Perez A.K.A. Joey Kid came from Puerto Rico with his parents at 4 years old. The family soon settled in the Bronx, NY and that's where it all started. This High School Of The Performing Arts graduate knew from a very young age that music and dance was in his blood. Joey and his friends, including George Lamond spent their days studying music from the likes of Babyface to Hector Lavoe.

At the age of 17 Joey stood in line every friday to get into the legendary Freestyle club The Devil's Nest, and was turned down each time because of his age. One night they had a talent show and Joey was finally allowed in. Joey took to the stage and sang "A little bit of love" by New Edition and blew the people away. Two of the judges were Sal Abbatiello and singer Nayobe and they were just mesmerized by his performance. He came in second but he stood out among the rest. Soon after he became a reguar at NYC's Heartthrobs and then Freestyle singer, and now Latin superstar, LaIndia started asking around about him as word was getting out about his talent. She wanted Joey to meet with some people from the industry who could help him get his career started. This got the ball rolling. Shortly after Joey was signed to Bassement Records and released his first single in 1988 titled "Broken promises."

"Broken Promises" was a huge club and radio hit from New York to Miami. I'll never forget the first time I saw Joey perform at the Hialeah Spring Festival in Miami back in 89. The kid had so much energy on stage, he just blew us all away with his dancing. He was considered "The Latin George Michael"on Miami's Power 96. After having a huge hit with the Freestyle classic "I won't stop loving you," C-Bank returned with "Perfect". This slammin' record was produced by Mickey Garcia and Elvin Molina, and this time sung & performed by Gemini, who now goes by the name of Joei Mae. C-Bank released a bunch of hit singles with different vocalist through the years, but Gemini was the only one out in the club circuit performing them back then. I love the long intro to this track. P.S. Joei Mae also did the 90's Freestyle classic "Promise me your heart" and "He's my baby" which was a cover of the old Lisette Melendez song. They were both produced by the amazing Carlos Berrios. This is one of those records which I didn't really feel when I first heard it play on the radio, but I slowly grew to love it at the end. It was a hit on Miami's Power 96 back in 1987, and also in New York where this girl was from. Her name was Nadia Zino and she released a few hit singles under the name Midnight Fantasy. I heard a different girl named Irene Kwiat recorded the vocals to this song, but don't know how true that is since it sounds exactly like Nadia's vocals on it. This single was produced by Tommy Musto and techno/house DJ Frankie Bones. Released on Tropical Heat Records in 1987.

Going Back to the classics, Here is the queen of Freestyle, Judy Torres with her first single "No reason to cry." It was originally released on Jackie Jack Records (Check older post for it), but The single didn't make much noise until Profile Records took notice and re-released the song with new mixes. Well it was a wrap after that because the song blew up and became an instant classic. Although it only reached #16 on Billboards Dance Club Play, and #46 on Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Singles sales, the song is a huge favorite to many Freestyle heads. I know M.I.A. is as far from a Freestyle artist as you can get, but I needed to take a break from the classics and Post some hot Freestyle remixes of hers. I fucken love M.I.A., she is one of my favorite artist around. I seen her perform many times in the past, and lucky me I got to check her out again this past weekend at my job's (DIESEL) 30th anniversary XXX party in Brooklyn, NY. And What a party it was with performances by M.I.A. with Rye Rye, suprise artist T.I. (he killed it), Franz Ferdinand,Chaka Kahn, Hot Chip, and Pharrell Williams with N*E*R*D. Fucken Amazing, especially when T.I. announced the very pregnant M.I.A. on stage and they did "Swagger like us"(favorite song right now) together. Wow! Shout out to all my drunk Diesel crew & family (love u all). This was most def the best party I been to in years. Thanks to the open bar, I had my drink and my two step all night. So I checked out Madonna's Sticky & Sweet tour at Madison Square Garden tuesday night. And as always, she put on an amazing performance. I had a blast (Thanks Channing). As I watched the show I came to realize how far she's gone in her career since her start in the 80's. She's accomplished so much and has become an icon to so many people around the world (I fucken love her). Then I wondered which Freestyle artist would've been in the same league as Madonna had Freestyle music evolved and kept being supported by the music industry. Well only two ladies came to mind, one was Sa-Fire, and the other was this lady right here, the sexy Corina.

Corina returned with "Give me back my heart" after having success with her 1987 debut "Out of control." It was her second single, and my favorite Corina track. The song was a hit reaching #26 on Billboards Dance Club Play, and #25 on Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Single Sales. I did get to catch lead singer Eileen perform a few years back at a reunion show in Jersey's Sandbar, and she was still looking great. If TKA were the kings, then these girls were the Queens. They had hit after hit, and this one was one of their biggest. After having their second single, the pop sounding "Spring Love" fail at radio, they returned to their Freestyle roots and scored a smash hit with this song. I remember I used to have a big crush on lead singer Angel back in the day. I always wanted to meet her so I could tell her how I felt. Well they happend to do an in store autograph party at some record store in Miami, and I thought this was gonna be my chance. After a while of debating I finally had the balls to go up to her. but when she asked me for my name, I got so nervous and started stuttering like crazy. I think I pissed on myself a little. I was so embarrased I ran out of that store so fast.When I happend to look back, I saw Angel and the other girls laughing. I wanted to die.

"Because of you" was a crossover hit for the girls, reaching #27 on Billboards Hot 100,#16 on the Hot Dance Club Play, and #8 on Hot Dance/Maxi-Single Sales. It was written by the late David Cole of C&C Music Factory, and Produced by DJ "Little" Louie Vega and Robert Clivilles who was also part of C&C. The boys returned in 1987 with their third hit single "Scars of Love". It's one of my favorite TKA songs. It was around this same time that these boys inspired me to form a group with my junior high school friend Lazaro. I think we were called something stupid like Silent Cries. I had written a song for us titled "Girl you know I need your body"(LOL) during our lunch break in the cafeteria. I really felt in my little heart that our song would be the next big Freestyle hit. We were on our way to be the next TKA. Boy was I wrong with lyrics like "Girl you know I need your body, girl you know I want your body, Girl you know I love your body, girl you know I need it right now!" LMAO....Needless to say nothing came out of it but false hopes. Hey I was only 13 years old filled with big dreams, and plus during these days everyone and their mother had a record out.

Anyway here is my favorite group of all time, the kings-TKA with "Scars of love." They were a big inspiration to many latin boys like me growing up. This song is a true freestyle classic. Born and raised in The Bronx, Michael Kidd Gomez a.k.a. MKG started his career in dance music at 16 years old. His first production was this Freestyle club classic "Tears Shed" featuring the vocals of Emery. I read somewhere that this song was recorded in someone's bathroom subsituting as a studio. Actually that was common in the days of Freestyle. Many artist recorded their song's in people's basement, bathroom's or closet (ghetto)....It's One of the reasons why I love this music so much lol. Released on Dance City Records out of The Bronx, way back in 1988.

After having two big pop hits from his 1987 album "Just visiting this planet,"Jellybean returned to his roots with "Mirage."Actually the dance song "Just a mirage" featuring Adele Bertei was the official single, but it was the side B version "Mirage (Dancers Dream)" featuring India that blew up and became a big Freestyle hit on radio and clubs. The single reached #4 on Billboards Club Chart, and #11 on Billboards Maxi-Single Sales in 1988. "I'm writing this letter to let you know"....(sung with a thick puerto rican accent) were the first words to this classic Cutting Records jam which was sung by Maria Respeto a.k.a. the original Giggles (legend has it theres been 5 giggles...yikes!). "Love letter" became a huge crossover hit, played on most stations throughout the country. For some strange reason Miami did not pick up on this great Giggles song, I only knew it because I used to always buy records and check record pool charts in New York, and this was always on top.

The song was picked up by Atlantic Records and re-released. it peaked at #21 on Billboards Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Singles Sales. Giggles released many hits through the years, and still performs at most Freestyle reunion shows, but beware this is not the original girl. Maria Respeto where you at girl? "Love Letter" was produced by Todd Terry, Zahid Tariq and Eddie Mercado and released in 1987.

Born Elsie Rodriguez in the Bronx, New York, Fascination's big break in the music industry began when she was introduced to Todd Terry at the legendary Copacabana. She was then signed to Vinylmania Records and released this song which was a huge hit on radio and in the Freestyle clubs of New York and Miami. "Why you wanna go" peaked at #34 on Billboards Hot Dance/Maxi-Singles Chart.

I love this girl, she and her dancers used to always tear it up on stage.she has released many hot Freestyle tracks through the years, making her a legend in this genre. this was her first classic below which was released in 1987. Taking it back to the days of The Funhouse nightclub in New York City. This Record came out during the time I used to live in New Jersey, and Although I was way to young to get in The Funhouse, my Aunt's boyfriend Enrique would come back home with crazy breakdancing battles stories which would leave me fascinated. He would also bring home records that they used to play there, this one was one of them.

Jellybean covered Babe Ruth's "The Mexican" in 1984, and it was a huge club record, especially in the Electro/Latin Hip Hop underground scene of New York City. He recruited the vocals of it's original singer Janita Haan for this remake. The beats to this song are so fucken sick. listen to the break or Dub mix (my fave) and see. Thanx to one of my contributers Rob, I also included Babe Ruth's 1973 original,The Bombers amazing version(played by Larry Levan at The Paradise Garage) from West End Recods, plus Thalia's 2002 version. Like Whoa!

The first time I saw Isis performed was at a power 96 beach concert on the 4th of july in 1988. I remember there was a huge fight during the show, and all I kept doing was ducking beer bottles that were flying over my head just to see her....ahh the good ol' memories of Freestyle's past, they were the best. This New York record was produced by the legendary DJ Todd Terry who produced some of the hottest Freestyle and House jams of the late 80's and 90's. He's also another amazing House DJ who rips it everytime I hear him spin. Isis released another single titled "Salsa with me"(will post later) but this jam was her best. It was a big club record and a moderate hit on radio. Released on Posse Records in 1988.

If you walked into any New York or Miami Freestyle club during the late 80's you would've probably heard the crowds chanting the words "Arroz Con Pollo! Cafe Con leche!" at any point in the night. The first time I heard this track was actually on the radio right after I came from the movies from watching "Friday the 13th part 7: The New Blood. I still remember my Tia(Aunt) dancing & singing along to this song.....Damn seems like only yesterday.

Here is another killer Frankie "Bones" production. This record is sooo sick! A hot Freestyle Electro break track that was big in Freestyle clubs in 1988. DJ Phil Jones used to always mixed this record on power 96, and it used to drive me crazy....it still gets me poppin everytime I play it.

DJ Frankie Bones was later best known for bringing the Rave culture to the united states, and for also producing Techno and house tracks during the early 90's. I remember his "Storm Rave" parties in Brooklyn during my days as a raver. who can forget those three day Ecstacy induced times, they were a blast! lol. You can still can catch Frankie spinnin' at underground parties all over the world.

I'll never forget bumpin' into him one day at some underground vintage record shop in Brooklyn that my friend took me to a few years back(shout out to Marcel!). The dude was so cool that he took us out to dinner that night. We talked about everything, including all his early Freestyle tracks he produced. He is a living legend that still keeps it coming. One of things that drove me crazy about Freestyle was not being able to see what some of these artist looked like. MTV would rarely play any Freestyle videos, and there wasn't a whole lot of publicity in magazines, plus I would be to young sometimes to get in the clubs to see them perform, but worst of all was most of the 12" inch singles that were being released had no picture cover of the artist, So I had no idea what some of these singer's looked like, that is until I saw them in concert. It was all left to the imagination. That is the case with this group right here who till this day, I still don't have the slightest idea on what they look like. All I know is that they were from New York and probably latin....If anyone out there has a picture of these guys, please hook me up! Taking it back to the late 80's with Charlie Keyes and Charlie "Babie" Rosario who were Freestyle duo Babie & Keyes. Man did I play this 12" inch out! I still remember going to the record store around my way and buying it when I was 12. Babie & Keyes recorded a few more songs and released the slammin' "Secrets of Love" single (which I will post later) but "Playgirl" was their biggest. Charlie Babie eventually went solo and released two hot songs on Mic Mac Records, and later was part of the 20 Fingers trio who went to produce a bunch of dance hits in the 90's like Gillette's "Short Dick Man"...lol. The other half, Charlie Keyes had stints behind the scenes as producer and mixer and eventually founded the Talent agency Red Entertainment. "That night, a wild party...Women beat their men"....A one hit wonder best remembered for this song. "The Dominatrix Sleeps Tonight" was a brave, gutsy single for 1983. The lyrics weren't really explicit, but the very subject of S&M was enough to prevent the song from being a mainstream hit in the States. MTV refused to air the song's 1984 video. nonetheless the song was a huge underground hit in Dance Clubs worldwide. The group consisted of lead vocalist Claudia Summers, Producer Ken Lockie and also Keyboardist/Synthesist Peter Baumann.

I fucken Love this record! Another favorite 12"-inch in my in my collection. when I was young boy and first heard this on the radio, I had no idea what she was talking about in the song. All I cared about was the beat. Little did I know.....Hahaha. What a classic record with A combination of Electro, new wave synth pop, and Freestyle, here is the "Dominatrix sleep's tonight" below. I think my favorite producers of all time are these dudes Chris Barbosa and Mark Liggett, these guys had hit and hit with their amazing productions. They did it again with this banger right here which peaked at #10 on Billboards Dance Club Chart.

Herley Johnson was part of Philadelphia's doo-wop group The Ambassadors in the late 60's, but when the group broke up Herley went solo and ended up having a hit with "If this Ain't Love" using pseudonym Jay Novelle. I remember our station in Miami Power 96 used to blast this song all the time when I was mad young. Brings back so many great memories. Released on Emergency Records back in 1984, this Classic track features background vocals by Jimi Tunnel (he must have been on everyone's song's back then).

Alisha was only 15 when she released this song. the teenage singer from Brooklyn, New York had several popular dance hits during the Madonna era of the mid 80's. "All night passion" was her very first single.I absolutely love this record, it is such a great dance song that I occasionally still play. Although I really don't consider this a true Freestyle song, it played perfectly right next to any Latin Hip Hop/ Freestyle song that played on the radio or clubs during this time, and it also influenced a lot of the female artist in freestyle scene. Released in 1984 on Vanguard Records, "All night passion" was a Huge dance record on radio and clubs all over the world, reaching #4 on Billboards Dance Charts. This record is the shit! Another bangin' production by the boys Mark Liggett & Chris Barbosa who tried to duplicate the Shannon sound with this record. This still managed to have a life of it's own though. Xena was actually grammy award winning vocalist Lisa Fischer(How do I ease the pain") who was best know as back up vocalist for Luther Vandross. "On the upside" was a Huge song in the New York City clubs during the Breakdancing craze, The song ended up peaking at #7 on Billboards Hot Dance Club. Everyone has their own opinion on what the first Freestyle song was, Freestyle fans have been arguing about this for so many years now. I think it's quite funny when these heated debates pop up every now and then on internet forums. Many list Shannon's "Let the music play" as the first, other's say it was Lisa Lisa since she was the first latina star to crossover with this sound on "I wonder if I take you home", and others say it was Nayobe since she was not only latin, but also touched a sound on "Please don't go"that was cultural with it's hot latin rhythms. I feel each one of them had a big part creating this sound, so I say all of thee above, but I'd also include "one more shot" & "I.O.U." in there since they were released first. Nonetheless they all paved the way for the Freestyle genre.

Regardless of who came first, this was and still is one of the greatest dance tracks ever released. I don't think I will ever grow tired of this song. I remember Shannon's music being blasted from every kids boombox back when I lived in New Jersey in 1984. This groundbreaking track was a monster of a hit at club's & radio worldwide. The song redefined the Electro funk sound that Arthur Baker and John Rocca(C-Bank,Freeez) developed in 1982.

Shannon started her career when she auditioned for producers Chris Barbosa and Mark Ligget(George Lamond, Monet), they liked her vocals so much, they introduced her to the track "Fire & Ice" which would later evolve into Shannon's signature song "Let the music play." The song was a smash reaching #8 on Billboards Hot 100, and #1 on the Dance Charts for weeks. She was also nominated for a grammy, and released many great hits which I will post later, but this was her biggest. Let's take it back once again to the year of 1983 with another huge dance record which inspired the sound of Freestyle, and helped jump start the movement. Freeez was a U.K. band which formed in the late 70's by lead vocalist John Rocca. They released a few hit singles but "I.O.U." was their biggest and baddest! It spent two weeks at number one on Billboards Dance Chart in America, and number 2 in the U.K. charts. It was written, produced and mixed by the amazing Arthur Baker (Afrika Bambaataa, Neworder), and also mixed by legends Jellybean Benitez, and John Robie. Huge club and radio song which can still be heard today. Included below is The Latin Rascals mix which was released years later when the song was remade and remixed.

Another classic Electro dance bomb written, produced & mixed by John Robie who also co-produced Afrika's Bambaataa's "Planet Rock," plus many more classic jams. This record also included the unique vocals of Jenny Burton. "One more shot" is one of those songs I never get tired off, the amazing' production with the glass-breaking sound was so ahead of it's time back in 1982. It was a blue print for the Freestyle sound that was about to emerge in the following years.

One of the special things about this record was that it was played on Miami's power 96 as a classic during 1989, but when the song kept getting so many request, the station decided to bring it back to life by adding it to their regular rotation like a brand new song. Due to popular demand for this then out of print record, the song's label Next Plateau re-released the single and it became a huge hit all over again during that year selling thousands of copies of the 12" inch. Originally released in 1982, check out the classic "One more shot" which made Billboards top 5 the same week Michael Jackson's "Thriller" was #1.

Here is another 1983 song from a former South Bronx choir girl who topped Billboard's Dance Charts with this slammin' Electro B-boy dance hit which served as a blue print for Freestyle music. "I remember what you like" was a huge club hit, especially at the Funhouse Niteclub where it was a favorite with DJ Jellybean. One of my early memories with this song was watching the kid's breakdancing to it on Times Square in New York City back in 1984 when I was just only 8 years old. I remember I had on a red Michael Jackson type of jacket with zippers all over it, including that famous glove he used to wear in his video's....yikes! Lmao.

The single was a big hit on radio and it even reached #21 on Billboards Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles Chart. Jenny Burton was also the lead singer for C-Bank's smash hit "One more shot". Produced by legend John Robie and released on Atlantic Records, below is the classic "I remember what you like."

Although not a "True" Latin Freestyle record in every sense of the word,"Infatutation" does have hints of freestyle written all over it. Up Front's Dance classic was big on stations like Miami's Power 96 which played the song like it was brand new in the late 80's along side all the latest Freestyle jams at the time. I remember I got to see the girls of Up Front at the Power 96 4th of july beach show back in 1988 where they performed this song. The track was actually released in 1983 during the B-boy era and went on to sell over two hundred fifty thousands copies. One of the girls from the group named Lottie Dah later went on to form the Freestyle trio Leather & Lace (which you can check out on the post below).This is such a great Dance tune which was a Huge club song in NYC and in Miami.
